The VI-D3 is since its first version from over 20 years ago the first choice of garages and private owners to check their caravans and mobile homes for leakages and other moisture problems.
Either for the yearly check-up or purchase of your caravan, this instrument protected users from costly repairs ans disastrous purchases.
CARAVAN INSPECTION:
It is advisable to inspect your caravan for moisture once or twice per year. The VI-D3 is very well suited to assist you with this task. Since electromagnetic waves go right through the materials, whether through plastic or laminated wood, measurements are done non-destructively. They should be done on the caravan's inside in places such as corners around doors, windows and edges where leakages are most likely to occur. The results that are displayed had better be written down in a list with a remark where a particular measurement was taken. (Tip: use little markers with numbers.)
Please bear in mind that the measurement results are shown on the Caisson 15 Scale, which, because of the variety of materials, is a relative scale and doesn't represent percentages. With each inspection compare the new values with the old ones: should there be any significant change, it could imply a moisture problem, in which case you might want to contact a specialist.
Readings can generally be interpreted as follows:
2,5 till 3,0 is a normal indication for a dry material:
3,0 till 5,5 means that there can be some metal construction behind the wall that influences the measurement; this is normal and such readings should remain constant.
5,5 and higher could be a normal reading depending on the type of caravan; such readings should remain constant. In case they do not over a longer time, there is a high probability that moisture has set in, and so such places should have your special attention.
It is important to know the construction of your caravan well and have some understanding of the device and measurement principles to make correct assumptions.
